Psychedelia book
APRIL 2024
For this project, I had to create an informative book on the design history of psychedelic art. This book was a big challenge to create because I had to keep a good balance between the style of the book, but also make it look not too overwhelming.
THE PROCESS:
MOODBOARD:
ILLUSTRATIONS:
To begin this project, I started by researching some art pieces in the psychedelic style. Psychedelic art has a ton of bright colors, fun patterns, and illustrations so I tried to find ways to incorporate these elements into my design history book. That being said though, I needed to make sure I could have a good balance between having the psychedelic style and making sure that it wasn’t too overwhelming for the viewer.
A huge part of psychedelic are illustrations and patterns. For my book, I decided to incorporate some illustrations into the design of the book to fit with the style. I created these using Adobe Fresco and Adobe Illustrator.
FINISHED SPREADS:
For the front and back covers, I wanted to re-create the psychedelic style band posters that were super popular at the time. I started with the illustration shown above, and then I ended up changing the colors and adding some dimension to them. For the typography, I used the puppet warp tool to create the flowing text that mimics the side profile line of the woman. I also wanted to make it so the front cover could be looked at on its own, but when layed out next to the back cover it’s a whole image.
